The Live-Action Barbie Movie Has Found Its Lead, And She's Going To Crush This Role

n the current state of film and TV, it seems like no property is off limits. Movie concepts that previously would have been impossible are suddenly being produced, and even delighting audience. Case in point: the latest trend of making Toy brands into quirky and delightful comedies. The Lego Movie was one of the biggest hits of 2014, and Trolls is faring well at the box office as well. And then there's the mysterious live-action Barbie movie, which is bringing the iconic doll onto the silver screen. The folks at Sony have just announced the film's star, as well as the overall concept, and they're a perfect fit

Comedian, actress, and writer Amy Schumer will be the lead character in Barbie. The PG comedy has a pretty exciting original concept, and Schumer's part is described as the following (via Deadline):

Amy Schumer will play a character that lives within Barbieland. Barbieland houses all of the various Barbie characters that have been introduced in the long running toy line. But Schumer will be a Barbie who doesn't quite fit into the idealistic world of her home. She's not perfect, she's loud, and she doesn't behave the way Barbies should. Schumer's character will eventually go on an adventure in the real world, before attempting to return and save her home. And while it's a bit similar to Enchanted in its premise, Barbie will teach both Amy Schumer's character, as well as the audience, that what is within really matters, and that we should all accept our imperfections.

I've got to say, that's not at all what I expected from Barbie. While I don't typically attend PG movies, a modern and inclusive take on the Barbie concept seems like exactly where the filmmakers should go. And with Amy Schumer's star power and comedic timing on the project's side, it may very well be a hit.

The Barbie brand has historically been rather divisive. Many praise Barbie for featuring women in basically every job possible. This teaches young girls and boys that they can become anything they want when they grow up, as long as they work hard. However, the doll has been criticized for setting unrealistic on women's bodies. While the brand recently expanded to petite and full figured dolls, Barbie herself is all legs and no tummy.

But the movie Barbie marks a possible change. Amy Schumer is an advocate for self love and body acceptance, so if she's signed up for Barbie, the message has to be positive.

Barbie is just the latest in a line of exciting acting projects that Amy Schumer has been booking. After her breakout role in Trainwreck, the actress has been transitioning from stand-up and TV to film, to the joy of anyone who has ever seen an episode of Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer.

How Happy Hogan Fits Into Spider-Man: Homecoming, According To Jon Favreau

pider-Man: Homecoming is starting to feel a little bit like Iron Man 4. OK, that's an exaggeration, but we knew that Marvel and Sony's first joint Spider-Man adventure was going to have Robert Downey Jr. in place as a bridge between Homecoming and the MCU, and then we learned that Happy Hogan, beloved bodyguard to the boisterous Tony Stark, would have a role as well. But how big of a role? That was a mystery.

Luckily, I happened to hop on the phone with Jon Favreau in support of his movie The Jungle Book on the same day that footage from Spider-Man: Homecoming screened for comic book fans in Brazil. Chatter on Twitter suggested that Favreau had a big part to play in the Homecoming footage, so I asked him what Happy's role would be in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. And Favreau told me:

I'm like... I'm looking after him. He needs someone to help him out.

This suggests that Happy Hogan will serve as way more than just a cameo role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And where there's Happy, there's usually Tony. Hogan has been fighting alongside his boss since the first Iron Man days (when Jon Favreau also served as a director). The manservant was waylaid in Iron Man 3 after an encounter with a powerful villain. But this sounds like Happy Hogan will be part of the action with Peter Parker swings in battle in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Could Spidey even share a fight scene or two with Iron Man? If they're trying to keep pace with Captain America: Civil War, then including an Avenger only makes sense.

Reflecting on the film shoot for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Jon Favreau told me:

I had a lot of fun on that movie, working with Robert [Downey Jr.] and everything. It was a good time, and I liked the whole gang. It was really terrific.

Naturally, Jon Favreau helped kick off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 before passing the baton and returning, as an actor, whenever he was needed as Happy Hogan. Sony and Marvel confirmed his presence in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and now we know that he'll be assisting Tom Holland's wall-crawler at some point throughout the film.

When will we see the first Spider-Man: Homecoming footage? Soon, I'm hoping. If I had to guess, I'd say that the trailer could be attached to Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, or Sony's Passengers, each in theaters later this month. We'll bring you the coverage as soon as we see it. For now, what are your thoughts on Happy Hogan's return?
